Sustainability
Sustainability
by design.
A mindset embedded in the practice — shaping site, form, structure, reuse and material from the first sketch.
Our position
Not a service.
A mindset.
Sustainability is not simply a consultancy service at DSJ Design.
Environmental thinking shapes the earliest strategic decisions on a project — site, form, structure, reuse and material — rather than being applied late as compliance.
We describe what we do and how we approach it. We do not publish environmental claims, certifications or performance figures that have not been verified on a specific project.

Reuse & retrofit
Work withwhat exists.
The lowest-carbon building is very often the one already standing. We begin by testing how much of the existing structure, fabric and character can be retained.
Retrofit is approached with the same rigour as new build: fabric performance, moisture, daylight and comfort resolved together rather than in isolation.

Materials
Materialprovenance.
Specification is a design decision. We favour materials with a clear story — where they came from, how they age, and how they can be repaired or reused.
Detailing is kept honest and legible so junctions can be maintained rather than replaced.

Landscape & biodiversity
Buildingsin a setting.
External design carries environmental weight: shading, water, microclimate and habitat all sit alongside architecture in our thinking.
Planting is designed as part of the project, not applied afterwards.
How it shows up
Ten considerations.
- 01
Passive design
Orientation, form, daylight and ventilation considered first.
- 02
Energy
Reducing demand before adding technology.
- 03
Carbon
Considering embodied and operational carbon together.
- 04
Materials
Responsible specification with an understanding of provenance.
- 05
Reuse
Retaining and adapting existing structure wherever viable.
- 06
Retrofit
Improving the performance of existing buildings sensitively.
- 07
Longevity
Designing for durability, maintenance and long service life.
- 08
Landscape
External design as part of environmental performance.
- 09
Biodiversity
Planting and habitat considered alongside architecture.
- 10
Adaptability
Spaces able to change use as needs evolve.
